Last night I packed up two boxes of scarves that my Mom had knit during the year. (Anyone who reads my blog knows my Mom, who will be 90 next month, has macular degeneration and having been a far better knitter than I am, basically knits by touch.)
The scarves will be making their way to Cangleska.in Kyle, SD. Very briefly, Cangleska provides domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy to citizens of the Oglala Sioux Tribe living on or adjacent to the Pine Ridge Reservation. It operates two shelters and provides services for Native women and their children living on or near the reservation. Pine Ridge Reservation is also helped by Warm Woolies donations of knitted clothing. Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations are reported to have the lowest per capita income in the country.
For a behind the scenes look at Pine Ridge, I have included a link from the New York Times of Aaron Huey's to photograph poverty in America. If you are interested in knitting or crocheting for Pine Ridge, you can visit Warm Woolies or vist Pam's site here or the Ravelry Group, Afghans for Pine Ridge.
