It's great to home from California. Even thought the weather was picture perfect everyday,
I love the change of seasons and was thrilled to get off the plane to find that Fall had arrived on the East Coast.
I was fortunate enough to have an aisle seat on my out-going flight and was lucky enough to have a wonderful young woman seated next to me. She was on the last leg of her flight from Ireland on her way to a conference in San Diego. We started talking while I was flipping through the WEBS catalog when she asked me about knitting. Her daughter wanted to learn, but in the village where they live, it was difficult to find yarn and needles. (Which she found surprising in Ireland.) She and her husband and children had recently moved from Florida to Ireland, and although it was a big adjustment, she told me how happy she was living there.
(The first week that they were in their home, she thought she heard her son calling her in the middle of the night. When she got to his room she found that he was sleeping peacefully and it was the sheep that woke her up.)
While we chatted about our lives, we got to talking about tea and I explained that my Mom was English and a big tea drinker. At the end of the flight when we were getting our luggage down she opened her case and tore open a box of tea she had bought before she left Ireland. She wanted me to give some Irish tea to my Mom.
We talked so much on the way to California and everyone was in such a rush to leave the plane when we landed, that we never learned each other our names, which I am sorry for now because I would have loved to send some needles and yarn to her daughter.
My week in California went swiftly and all of the time was spent with family. The weather was perfect...warm days and cool nights. I didn't have time to visit any knitting stores but while visiting a Big Lots, I did spot some really nice yarn for $1.25 a skein. It is made in Canada and there were different patterns on each skein and is surprisingly soft. So, of course I bought 8 skeins for my Mom and managed to stuff it into my carry-on. Now I have to check out Big Lots the East Coast to see if they sell yarn too.

My son, the foodie, insisted I try In-N- Out Burger, which I managed to do. My one and only time driving on the Freeway.

I wish I could say that the flight home was a pleasant. I had upgraded with miles to first class for the return flight only to find that the man seated next to me coughed and sneezed all the way home, the food was terrible, (I longed for the hot dog, salad and cookies we had going out), and the movie was old and kept going out. I was grateful I had indulged in buying the new Dan Brown book at the airport. I read it all the way home.
On a happier note, my friend's grandson was born last Friday and even though her son's politics is far to the right of mine, I indulged him (it's his first son) and started this baby blanket.

I am hoping the yarn softens up a great deal when washed. I'm trying to theme the gift but not sure how I am going to do it while keeping a baby in mind. Camouflage sweater?
Right now I'm not indulging in any yarn purchases. I am saving all my pennies for Stitches, which is just short of a month away. Right now, it is just good to be home.
